Convert MBOX to PST for Microsoft Outlook

Moving from Gmail, Thunderbird or Apple Mail to Outlook? Upload your MBOX export and get one organized PST file that opens straight in Microsoft Outlook.

Gmail exports are sorted for you: Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts, Junk Email and Deleted Items go to the matching Outlook folders, every Gmail label gets its own folder, and archived mail goes to Archive.

  • Gmail labels become Outlook folders automatically
  • Attachments and inline images are kept
  • Sender, recipients, dates and read or unread status are kept
  • Mailboxes up to 20 GB, and up to 20 MBOX files in one PST
  • If something goes wrong near the end, you can still download everything converted so far

Questions

How do I export my Gmail as an MBOX file?

Go to takeout.google.com, click "Deselect all", tick only "Mail", then create the export. Google emails you a download link; the .zip it gives you contains a file such as "All mail Including Spam and Trash.mbox". Upload that file.

Will my Gmail labels become folders in Outlook?

Yes. Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Spam and Trash go to the matching Outlook folders, each of your own labels becomes a folder, and archived mail with no label goes to an Archive folder.

Are attachments kept?

Yes. Attachments, inline images, HTML and plain-text bodies, senders, recipients, dates and read status are all carried over.

How do I open the PST in Outlook?

In Outlook choose File > Open & Export > Open Outlook Data File and pick the downloaded PST. It appears in the folder list with all its folders.

Can I convert Thunderbird or Apple Mail mailboxes?

Yes. Thunderbird keeps each folder as an MBOX file without an extension, such as "Inbox" or "Sent"; add each one and pick its Outlook folder. Apple Mail's Mailbox > Export Mailbox creates a folder with a file named "mbox" inside: upload that file.

How large can the mailbox be?

Up to 20 GB per conversion, in one or several MBOX files. Large uploads are sent in pieces, and conversion keeps running on the server even if you close the page.
